Ubuntu Desktop

Ubuntu has a 6 month release schedule, every April and October. The versions correspond to the year and month it was released i.e 11.04 is the current stable release as it was released in April 2011. Accompanying the version number is an "appropriate" name, in this case Natty Narwhal. See the wiki for more details.

One thing that a lot of people expect is that a new version brings with it a load of visual improvements - like you would get in Windows. Well in 11.04 you get just that with the Unity shell on top of Gnome. Its quite a change a will take a bit of getting used to, I'm still using the classic gui for now (to select the classic gui simply logout and then choose the classic gnome option). If you login automatically it will remember this choice.
