About me

I've been developing websites for several years now (my first was actually back in 1997). I started off doing frontend development for a website hosting company and was involved in many of their ongoing projects including the corporates sites. I learned a great deal and got quite involved in CSS at the time (and the many headaches IE often gave).

I also had the opportunity to work on a sole project to integrate many different systems in to one CRMS. In developing this I learned how to build a larger scale system using some of the frontend skills I had learned and also put to use my backend development skills. Back then it was PHP4, MySQL 4 and JQuery although the database was migrated to MySQL 5 later on. PHP was also eventually upgraded to PHP5 which offered the chance to make some much needed improvements. It was a system built from the ground up which taught me a great deal in how to deal with the fundamental challenges a "larger" system offers.

Lately I have been developing websites in Joomla and Symfony with a little Wordpress thrown in. JQuery has given way to Mootools, mainly due to the fact Joomla integrates it and we all use it at work.

I use Ubuntu day to day and enjoy getting in to the nitty gritty of it (wireless issues forced me to get in to the nitty gritty back in version 6.10). Once I managed to free myself of the necessities of Windows only programs (still need windows for my ipod though) I found the many benefits of Linux - backup that does what it should, flexible command line tools, freedom from virus scanning and much more. I do admit that there are still some aspects of Windows that work better - keyboard shortcuts, folder information and Gui quality (it just seems sharper).

I like a bit of photography from time to time and the banner image you see above was my attempt at an arty nature shot! I think it turned out quite well.
